Ogden is a historic city in northern Utah and serves as the county seat of Weber County. Situated at the base of the Wasatch Range at the confluence of the Ogden and Weber Rivers, Ogden is historically famous as the preeminent railroad junction of the Intermountain West. The completion of the Transcontinental Railroad at nearby Promontory Summit in 1869 made Ogden the primary transfer station for passengers and cargo crossing North America, prompting the famous slogan, ‘You can’t get to heaven without passing through Ogden.’ Today, the city has successfully transitioned from its industrial rail history into a national capital for outdoor recreation and advanced manufacturing, while maintaining its rugged historic charm.
The city’s historic 25th Street, once filled with wild-west saloons and hotels, has been revitalized into a vibrant commercial district lined with independent restaurants, local breweries, galleries, and shops. Ogden is the gateway to the Ogden Valley, which houses three major ski resorts: Snowbasin (host of the 2002 Winter Olympic downhill events), Powder Mountain (the largest skiable acreage in North America), and Nordic Valley. The city’s economy is supported by aerospace, defense contractors, and outdoor equipment manufacturing.
Ogden’s commercial and industrial sectors are highly active, driven by the city’s proximity to Hill Air Force Base. The downtown features modern retail plazas, the Junction entertainment center, and a variety of professional service firms, making it a major economic powerhouse in northern Utah.
In addition, the city boasts a rich arts and culture scene, anchored by the Peery’s Egyptian Theater and the Ogden Union Station, which houses multiple museums.
