Community Overview & Local History

Veyo, Utah is a small community situated in northern Washington County, along the scenic route between St. George and Enterprise. Established in 1918, Veyo is nestled in a volcanic valley characterized by ancient cinder cones and lava flows. Today, the town is a quiet retreat famous for its volcanic swimming pool, outdoor recreation, and famous local pie shop.

Veyo was settled in 1918 by a group of families who established homes in the volcanic valley. The name “Veyo” is an acronym chosen by a local youth group, combining the letters of Valley, Elbow, Yellow, and Oasis. The community grew as an agricultural pocket, leveraging natural warm springs and fertile volcanic soils.

Neighborhoods, Schooling, & Living

Living in Veyo provides a rural, high-desert lifestyle with milder summers than the lower St. George valley. The community features single-family homes, horse properties, and small ranches. Families are served by the Washington County School District, with children attending schools in nearby towns.

Veyo’s economy is small, anchored by local retail, tourism, and agricultural operations. The community draws substantial weekend traffic from St. George, with visitors stopping at local shops and the famous Veyo Pies bakery. Many residents commute to jobs in the St. George metropolitan area.

Key Landmarks & Outdoor Recreation

The primary attraction is the Veyo Pool and Crawdad Canyon, a privately owned resort featuring a spring-fed swimming pool, climbing walls, and streams popular for catching crawdads. Nearby Baker Dam Reservoir offers fishing and camping, while the surrounding desert features volcanic cinder cones and off-road trails.

Key local landmarks include the Veyo Cinder Cone volcano, Veyo Pool resort, and Crawdad Canyon climbing area. The Baker Dam Reservoir provides quiet fishing and camping spots. The scenic Gunlock State Park and Snow Canyon State Park are located within a short driving distance.
