Veyo, Utah Visitor Guide: Volcanoes, Pools & Local Pies

Located just 20 miles northwest of St. George on the edge of the scenic Pine Valley Mountains, Veyo, Utah is a unique desert oasis. Situated at an elevation of 4,500 feet, Veyo offers a cooler escape from the summer heat of Southern Utah. This visitor guide highlights the town’s geologic wonders, local recreation spots, and famous local dining.

The Veyo Pool and Crawdad Canyon

The crown jewel of Veyo’s summer recreation is the historic Veyo Pool, a natural hot spring-fed swimming pool located at the bottom of a steep basalt canyon. The pool maintains a comfortable temperature of approximately 80 degrees year-round. Surrounding the pool is Crawdad Canyon, a private park featuring over 150 bolted sport climbing routes, grassy picnic spots, and a creek where kids can catch crawdads.

Veyo Volcano and Lava Flows

Veyo is home to a dormant cinder cone volcano, which last erupted between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. The volcano created extensive basalt lava flows that carved the canyons and riverbeds visible today. The cinder cone itself is visible from Highway 18 and can be hiked via a steep dirt trail, offering views of the surrounding black lava fields and sandstone hills.

Famous Local Pies

No trip to Veyo is complete without stopping at Veyo Pies. Located on Main Street, this bakery has earned regional fame for its handmade fruit, cream, and specialty pies, including the signature “Veyo Volcano” pie. It is a popular rest stop for travelers heading to Enterprise Reservoir or Gunlock State Park.
